Museum Talks:
How Do Artists Draw and Think?

As part of the exhibition Embodied Thought, we invite you to the first event in the talk series "How Do Artists Draw and Think?", featuring four artists from the exhibition – Kaspars Groševs, Diana Shpungin, Viktors Timofejevs, and Evita Vasiļjeva. The conversation will be accompanied by a brief live drawing demonstration, offering a direct glimpse into the artists' creative processes.

Drawing is not only the foundation of traditional artistic practice but also a contemporary, dynamic, and multifaceted means of expression. In contemporary art, it functions both as an independent medium and as an interdisciplinary form of artistic inquiry. The invited artists work across a wide range of media and materials, yet drawing plays a significant role in each of their practices. Together, we will explore why drawing remains important to them, what role it plays in their work, and how it relates to their ways of thinking.

The talk will be held in English.

The discussion will be moderated by artist and exhibition co-curator Maija Kurševa.

Artists

Kaspars Groševs

(Latvia, 1983) is an artist, musician, and curator based in Riga. Since 2014, he has run Gallery 427. A graduate of the Audiovisual Media Arts Department at the Art Academy of Latvia, his practice combines painting, installation, and sound while fostering connections within the art and music communities, with a particular interest in marginal and alternative forms of cultural expression.

Diana Shpungin

(USA, 1974) is a multidisciplinary American artist born in Riga. She emigrated to the United States as a child, received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, and currently teaches at Parsons School of Design, The New School. Working across drawing, sculpture, installation, and animation, she explores themes of memory, loss, care, and human relationships, transforming everyday materials into poetic, emotionally resonant spatial environments.

Viktors Timofejevs

(Latvia/USA, 1984) is a multidisciplinary artist born in Riga who lives and works in New York. He studied at Hunter College in New York and the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and currently teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. Through drawing, painting, video, and installation, he creates fantastical environments that investigate the intersections of language, systems, and individual experience.

Evita Vasiļjeva

(Latvia/France, 1985) is an artist based between Riga and Paris. She graduated from the Audiovisual Media Arts Department at the Art Academy of Latvia and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and completed a residency at De Ateliers. Her sculptures, videos, and installations are often created in situ using construction materials such as concrete, reinforcing steel, and ready-made objects. By manipulating and transforming these materials, Vasiļjeva creates an aesthetic that encourages an active dialogue between space, architecture, and the viewer's body.
