Among the oldest part of the collection, notably pieces include Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Greek and Roman granite and marble works. Meanwhile, the Middle Ages are represented by late 15th to 17th century church wood sculptures. A special place in the collection is held by marble originals by 19th century Italian artists. A large portion of the collection consists of bronze casts by several 19th and early 20th century French sculptors, Russian sculpture from the 19th to mid-20th century and early 20th century Belgian sculpture. The finest original sculptures from the collection are on view in the permanent display of the Art Museum RIGA BOURSE, complementing the European Art Gallery painting display, as well as residing in the Cabinet of Ancient Art and at the entrance to the Cabinet of Ancient Egyptian Art.

The foundation of the plaster cast collection was established in 1904 through an order of Ancient Greek, Ancient Roman and Renaissance sculpture plaster casts placed by Wilhelm Neumann (1849-1919), the first director of the Riga City Art Museum. These precise plaster copies of world-famous sculptures were produced in Germany at the August Gerber plaster cast workshop in Cologne and the City Gallery in Frankfurt am Main.
During the reorganization of the University and museums in the 1950s, the collection formed by Wilhelm Neumann was augmented by sculpture copies from the Art Cabinets of the University of Latvia and the Kurland Provincial Museum. Many of these had been commissioned from the cast workshops of the Royal Museums of Berlin (1830-1918) and the Berlin State Museums (during the 1920s).
More than one hundred of the most significant works from the plaster cast collection are currently displayed in the FOREST OF SCULPTURES – the permanent display of ancient and Renaissance sculpture plaster casts at the Museum Storage Facility at 8 Pulka Street.
