Scientific Document Centre

The Scientific Document Centre (SDC) of the Latvian National Museum of Art is a vital research resource housing unique collection of historic documents. The archive provides insight into the history of the museum, the curatorial processes of past exhibitions, and the creative output of artists, encompassing sketches, photographs, and scientific research papers of museum specialists.

The SDC holdings are available to researchers, students, and industry professionals.

Planning Your Visit

Access to archival materials and original documents is available by appointment only at the research room located in the Museum Storage Facility (8 Pulka iela, Riga).

To allow for the preparation of materials and scheduling, please submit your request at least 2 weeks in advance.

Please specify your research topic and provide as detailed a list as possible of the materials you wish to consult.

Rules of Conduct

Our priority is the long-term preservation of unique historical records. Therefore, visitors are asked to observe the following:

• To protect paper and archival records from irreversible damage, please use only graphite pencils, paper, or laptops/tablets for notetaking. The use of pens and markers is not permitted.
• For your safety and the safety of the documents, only museum staff members are permitted to move objects or remove them from their packaging.
• Please leave outerwear, food, drinks, and large bags in the cloakroom or a designated area. 

Photography and Publishing

• Photography without flash for research purposes is permitted, subject to approval by the SDC staff.
• Publications of images must be authorized in writing by the LNMA in advance.
• When publishing research, we request the following credit line: Latvian National Museum of Art, Scientific Document Centre

We would be grateful if, upon completion of your research, you submitted a copy of the work or a digital copy to the LNMA library.
