Scientific Document Centre
The Scientific Document Centre of the Latvian National Museum of Art preserves a comprehensive body of historical documents providing insights into the museum’s institutional and exhibition history, and the creative practice of artists. The archival holdings encompass artist’s sketches, photographic materials, personal and administrative papers, alongside scholarly research by the museum’s staff.
The SDC holdings are accessible to researchers, students, and industry professionals.
Planning Your Visit
Research involving archival materials and original documents is conducted on-site at the Museum Storage Facility (8 Pulka iela, Riga) and is strictly by appointment only.
To guarantee the availability of the requested materials and to schedule your appointment, please submit a formal application at least 2 weeks prior to your intended visit to: .
In your application, please state the scope of your research topic and provide as detailed a list of requested documents as possible.
Code of Conduct
Our priority is the long-term preservation of unique historical records. Therefore, we kindly ask that you observe the following rules during your visit:
- For notes, please use graphite pencils, paper, or laptops/tablets only. The use of pens and markers is not permitted.
- Archival materials may only be handled, retrieved, or removed from their protective housing by SDC specialist.
- Outerwear, large bags, as well as food and drinks, must be left in the cloakroom or other designated area.
Photography and Publishing
- Flash-free photography for personal study and research purposes is permitted, subject to authorization by museum staff.
- Publications of images required prior written authorization from the museum.
- When publishing your research, please utilize the following credit line: Latvian National Museum of Art, Scientific Document Centre.
Upon the completion or publication of your research, we kindly ask that one complimentary copy of the publication or a digital equivalent be submitted to the LNMA Library.
