Accessibility of LNMA Collection for Research
The Latvian National Museum of Art supports research, the academic process, and professional development by providing researchers with access to the LNMA collection.
The LNMA serves individual researchers, subject to prior approval of the application by the museum administration.
Before booking a visit, we invite you to explore our collections digitally:
- Information on more than 85 % of the LNMA collection is available in the Joint Catalogue of the National Museum Collection: www.nmkk.lv.
- Recent contemporary art acquisitions are viewable on the platform: makslaskolekcija.lv.
If the item you are looking for cannot be found on these platforms, our specialists will assist in the selection process during the application review.
Work with original artworks is strictly by appointment. To ensure the proper preparation of artworks for viewing and to coordinate schedules with collection curators, please request a visit at least 2 weeks in advance.

In the application, please specify the research topic and a list of objects of interest. If the research is being conducted as part of a study program, the application must include a certificate issued by the higher education institution.
Regulations for working in the storage facilities
- When working with the collection, only graphite pencils, paper, and laptops/tablets are permitted. To protect artworks from accidental and irreversible damage, pens and markers are strictly prohibited.
- For your safety and the safety of the artworks, only museum staff members are permitted to move objects or remove them from their packaging.
- Please leave outerwear, food, drinks, and large bags in the cloakroom or a designated area.
Photography and Publishing
- Photography without flash for research purposes is permitted, subject to approval by the collection curator.
- Publications of images must be authorized in writing by the LNMA in advance.
- When publishing research, we request the following credit line: Collection of Latvian National Museum of Art.
We would be grateful if, upon completion of your research, you submitted a copy of the work or a digital copy to the LNMA library.
Group Access
Access to the LNMA collection facilities for group study is strictly reserved for students of higher education institutions specializing in Art History, Cultural Heritage, Conservation, or closely related humanities fields.
To apply for a group collection visit, a member of the university faculty or a representative of the study department must submit a formal application to the museum, accompanied by a complete list of the students.
Please request a visit at least 15 business days prior to the proposed date for the visit.
Working hours
Researchers are accepted on working days only, by prior appointment with the relevant collection curator.
