Access to Collections

The Latvian National Museum of Art supports scholarly research, the academic study process, and professional development by providing individual researchers with access to the LNMA collection, subject to prior coordination and authorization by the museum administration.

Prior to scheduling an on-site visit, we encourage researchers to explore our collections online:

If the specific object cannot be located via our digital catalogues, our curatorial staff will assist with object selection during the application review phase.

Scheduling Your Visit

Research involving physical collection objects is strictly by appointment only. To allow our staff sufficient time for object retrieval, preparation, and schedule coordination with respective curator of collections, please submit your application at least 2 weeks in advance to: .

In your application, please clearly state the scope of your research topic and provide a detailed list of objects of interest. If the research is being conducted as part of a formal academic study program, a supporting certificate issued by your higher education institution should also be included in the application.

Code of Conduct within the Collection Storage

Our priority is to preserve the unique museum objects. Therefore, we kindly ask that you observe the following rules during your visit:

  • For notes, please use graphite pencils, paper, or laptops/tablets only. The use of pens and markers is not permitted.
  • Objects may only be handled, retrieved, or removed from their protective housing by the curator of collections.
  • Outerwear, large bags, as well as food and drinks, must be left in the museum cloakroom.

Photography and Publishing

  • Flash-free photography for personal study and research purposes is permitted, subject to authorization by museum staff.
  • Publication of images requires prior written authorization from the museum.
  • When publishing your research, please utilize the following credit line: Collection of Latvian National Museum of Art.

Upon the completion or publication of your research, we kindly ask that one complimentary copy of the publication or a digital equivalent be submitted to the LNMA Library.

Group Access

On-site group access to LNMA collection storages for educational purposes is strictly reserved for higher education students specializing in art history, cultural heritage, conservation, or related humanities disciplines.

Formal group applications must be submitted directly by a university faculty member or department representative, accompanied by a complete student list. Applications must be submitted no later than 15 business days prior to the intended visit to: .

Researchers are received on business days only, subject to mutually agreed time coordinated in advance with the relevant collection curator.
