Portrait Drawing Action: Face-o-mat

As part of Riga Art Week, we invite you to experience Swiss artist Tobias Gutmann’s internationally recognised portrait drawing action Face-o-mat — a unique encounter in which a portrait is created in just a few minutes through a present, intuitive and playful drawing process.

Since 2013, Tobias Gutmann has travelled the world with his Face-o-mat project, transforming the simple act of portrait drawing into a special encounter and exploring how technology has influenced the ways in which we assemble and portray our identity.

In this project, drawing has become a ritual in which the artist manifests and translates encounters through his hands. Looking closely, listening deeply and breathing together make it possible to see beyond outward appearance.

This internationally recognised public art project has been presented in more than 38 cities worldwide, including Centre Pompidou in Paris and Art Central in Hong Kong. Over the course of the project, the artist has created more than 5,500 portraits.
