Fernando Anuang’a
Fernando Anuang’a is a Kenyan movement artist, dancer and choreographer. He represents a new wave of contemporary choreographers striving to reignite interest in African dance and culture. His foundational movements are traditional, but he incorporates contemporary elements and techniques to create captivating and educational performances. Deeply inspired by Maasai dance, he excels in the fluid, undulating movements of the body, expressing the strength and belief of the Maasai people in the energy channelled between the earth and the sky.
Anuang’a draws his inspiration from the Maasai way of life and their environment. Intergenerational challenges, globalisation, and climate change are the hurdles they must overcome to ensure their continued existence. Through his work, Anuang’a not only celebrates Maasai traditions but also addresses the pressing issues they face in a rapidly changing world.
Since the 1990s, his dedication to preserving Maasai culture through song and dance has been a driving force. This commitment is set to materialise with the opening of a cultural centre in Maasai Mara in 2025, a space for local, national, and international exchange, which he initiated.
