Saturday Night Cinema
Exhibition Līga Purmale. The Garden of Past Pleasures
In her small-format series of paintings, Saturday Night Cinema, the artist raises the question of the meaning and influence of mass media and television in today's society. Although produced from 1999 to 2005, the paintings contain information and individuals relevant to our own time, including recognisable heads of state, sports broadcasts, military parades, and TV divas. Although the characters visible in these paintings, such as the former US president George W. Bush, today belong to the history of twenty years ago, the themes in the paintings echo today's rapid rise in access to information and social media use, which is increasingly being employed to manipulate information and images for malicious purposes.
