Dreams of All Lengths
From 14 February to 16 August 2026, the exhibition “Dreams of All Lengths” will be on view in the right-wing galleries on the 2nd floor of the Main Building of the Latvian National Museum of Art (1 Jaņa Rozentāla Square, Riga).
The exhibition will focus on and explore the manifestations of surrealism in the works of eight graphic artists – Māris Ārgalis (1954–2008), Ilmārs Blumbergs (1943–2016), Valija Brence (1941–2009), Maija Dragūne (1954), Arturs Ņikitins (1936–2022), Aija Ozoliņa (1932–2023), Māra Rikmane (1939), and Lolita Zikmane (1941).
Particular emphasis will be placed on the work of these important, yet so far not equally well-known and researched printmakers during the Soviet occupation period – the 1970s and 1980s – when surrealism, alongside abstractionism, was regarded as one of the art movements most undesirable to Soviet ideology.
The exhibition is part of the “Generation” cycle. Until now, the cycle has featured solo exhibitions. This time, for the first time within the framework of the series, a group exhibition will be organized – one that is based on research of the museum’s collection and highlights a specific medium: printmaking. In addition to works from the museum’s own collection, pieces from other sources – including the National Library of Latvia, the Artists’ Union of Latvia collection, and private collections – will be on loan to provide a broader insight into the creative output of the featured artists.
