Kilogram of Culture 2019
On February 15, 2020, at a festive awards ceremony in the LTV concert studio, the winners of the “Kilogram of Culture 2019” annual award, presented by Latvian Television and Latvian Radio, were announced. In the “Heritage” category, the award was given to the interdisciplinary exhibition Mary’s Journey. The Grosvalds Family Story.
Exhibition curator Kristīne Želve: “The words I have been saying since 2014, when my journey with Mary began, are – yes, the journey continues! With each passing year, with each new event, new people join us on this journey. In this project, we are the four elements, who the Art Museum welcomed into its space and allowed to spread out! Mary's lessons are still truly important today. Just like in Mary's case, we need to remember that your – the ordinary person's – choices can change a lot!”
The exhibition introduced the audience to the story of a family significant to Latvia – the Grosvalds family – and highlighted important episodes in Latvian state history over a century. The central figure of the exhibition was one of the descendants of the Grosvalds family – museum worker Mary Grīnberga Junior (1909–1975), who, after World War II, succeeded in safeguarding and bringing back from Germany many of Latvia's museum treasures that the German occupying forces had evacuated to their territories.
The exhibition was part of the Latvian centenary program.Exhibition curators:
