Space landscapes and cycles of time, diverse rhythmic pulsations, cloud cities, the sea and structures bathed in warm sunlight – so vivid and full of imagery are the visual and musical visions of the unique Lithuanian Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis: preludes, canons and fugues, the first Lithuanian symphonic works and a string quartet. Born into a modest organist’s family, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a universal spirit – a painter in music and a musician in painting. All his works – in art, music and literature – are deeply lyrical, symbolic and flowing. Lithuanians are celebrating the Grandmaster’s 150th anniversary with an international exhibition No dzintara uz zvaigznēm (From Amber to Stars), while Latvians are commemorating him with a concert featuring his entire musical legacy for string quartet. This programme has been put together by one of Lithuania’s oldest professional associations, the most renowned Baltic chamber ensemble, the Čiurlionis String Quartet (1968). Only a small portion of the master’s approximately 400 musical works have survived, and those composed for string quartet (including a partially lost string quartet, several miniatures and variations) have been compiled into a unique program by the Čiurlionis String Quartet.
