Vija Celmins Foundation Grant Nominees Selected
Vija Celmins Foundation Grant Jury Nominates Eleven Artists
On 31 July 2025, the Latvian National Museum of Art concluded the application period for the Vija Celmins Foundation Grant of USD 30,000. A total of 85 applications were received.
We sincerely thank all artists who prepared and submitted their proposals, shared their artistic visions, and presented future plans. The diversity of applications demonstrated that no single medium dominates contemporary Latvian art – submissions included video art, performance, digital and multimedia works, virtual reality projects, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture made from recycled and unconventional materials, sound and light installations, and other creative experiments engaging with form, concept, and audience interaction.
According to the grant’s regulations, five candidates’ portfolios, CVs, and statements are to be forwarded to the United States for final review. However, in recognition of the high artistic quality and nuanced approaches of this year’s applicants, the jury decided to introduce the Vija Celmins Foundation to eleven Latvian artists.
Jury members:
- Dr art. Elita Ansone, Head of the 20th–21st Century Collections and Research Department, Art Museum ARSENĀLS
- Zane Čulkstēna, Founder of Kim? Contemporary Art Centre and ERDA consultancy
- Kaspars Groševs, artist, curator, co-founder of 427 Gallery
- Maija Kurševa, artist, curator, lecturer at the Art Academy of Latvia, founder and director of LOW Gallery
- Inga Meldere, artist, curator
We extend our gratitude to the jury for their dedicated work and thoughtful evaluation of the applications.
