Several Latvian sculptors have worked largely in the field of monumental sculpture, and their works are too large for museum collections. That is why the museum cannot offer an historically complete and objective look at Latvian sculpture. Some artists who worked in the field of monumental sculpture – Kārlis Zāle and Kārlis Jansons, for example – are represented in the collection very fragmentarily.

The memorial collection of Jāzeps Grosvalds

The memorial collection dedicated to the great artist Jāzeps Grosvalds (1891-1920) was established in 2005 on the basis of a bequest from Gerda Bokaldere and a purchase of many artworks from the artist’s relatives. The collection contains 2,483 items, including drawings produced by the artist in childhood and adolescence, periodicals which he produced for his family, as well as sketchbooks which he had with him no matter where he was. The collection includes drawings which Grosvalds produced while studying in Paris and then travelling through France, Spain and other European countries. There are drawings which illustrate the Latvian Red Riflemen and Latvian refugees of World War I. Grosvalds didn’t even stop drawing while part of the military himself. He drew scenes from absolutely every place that he ever lived – Jūrmala, Rīga, Paris, Munich, etc.

The memorial collection of Gustavs Šķilters

The basic collection of the Latvian National Museum of Art includes a massive collection of items related to one of the founders of professional sculpture in Latvia, Gustavs Šķilters (1874-1954). The most extensive collections feature the work of Ādams Alksnis, Arturs Baumanis, Pēteris Krastiņš, Voldemārs Irbe, Jānis Plēpis, Kārlis Padegs, Sigismunds Vidbergs, Gustavs Klucis, Kurts Fridrihsons, Pēteris Upītis, and others. The collection is divided up by technique – drawings, water-colours, pastels, engravings and lithographs. Works from the latter half of the 20th century, when the range of techniques was more extensive, are divided up into even greater detail, including posters and set designs. Over the last few years, the collection of graphic art has been supplemented with artwork created with some of the latest technologies that have been available in the world – digital printing, for instance.

Painting collection – 2nd half of the 20th century – today

The painting collection that encompasses the period between the 2nd half of the 20th century and today mainly consists of works made in Latvia or painted by Latvian-born artists in the post-war period abroad. The museum has nearly 7,000 paintings from more than 630 artists. Among them are enormously distinguished artists such as Jūlijs Feders, Janis Rozentāls, Vilhelms Purvītis, Ludolfs Liberts, Voldemārs Matvejs, Konrāds Ubāns, Jānis Liepiņš, Jānis Pauļuks, Boriss Bērziņš, Biruta Baumane, and others. The collection presents the work of many artists very completely, beginning with works created when the artists were students, continuing with diploma paintings, and ending with paintings from the latter years of their lives. Most artists, however, are represented with only a few major works of art.

The memorial collection of Boriss Bērziņš

In 2002, the artist Boriss Bērziņš (1930-2002) bequeathed his entire creative estate to the Latvian National Museum of Art. This included paintings, graphic art and drawings. The artist recorded the everyday events of life, work, the surrounding environment and his household in many different ways, and these were endless sources of inspiration in his creativity. The centre of the collection consists of several thousand drawings, including completely finished ones and ones that are just basic sketches.
