A solo exhibition by Vija Celmins will be opened at the Fondation Beyeler museum in Basel
On June 15, a solo exhibition by the Latvian-born American artist Vija Celmins will open to the public at the prestigious Fondation Beyeler in Basel, Switzerland.
This will be the most extensive presentation of the artist’s work in Europe in the past twenty years. The exhibition spans over six decades of creative activity—from her early works in the 1960s to her most recent pieces created in the past few years. On display will be paintings, drawings, and sculptures featuring ocean waves, spider webs, starry skies, desert landscapes, everyday objects, and surreal sculptures. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the artist’s unique visual language, which blends photorealism, minimalism, and conceptualism. By depicting elements of nature and daily life, Celmins draws attention to the texture and surface of materials, filling them with precision and density to create mesmerizing works of art.
Vija Celmins was born in Riga in 1938. At the end of World War II, she fled with her parents to Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1948. She studied art at the Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University and at the University of California, Los Angeles. Until 1980, she lived and worked in Los Angeles before relocating to New York. Throughout her life, Vija Celmins has built an impressive career, becoming one of the most renowned female artists in the world.
The exhibition will be on view until September 21.
